NMAT Review resources

People reviewing for the NMAT have two options, first is self-studying, and second is enrolling in a review center (or both for those who really want to get the much coveted 90+ percentile). While the second option may be less laborious, with one only having to attend his review classes and pick up from lessons programmed by the review center, it needless to say, costs money. Self-studying on the other hand, which should be free if one has the needed resources on hand, is a lot more taxing, and requires more focus if one is determined to get a good score from the exam.

Since I believe that the odds are almost equal, whether I enroll in a review center or on my own, I have chosen the the self study road and consequently saved myself some thousands of pesos.

Resources are as equally important as determination itself. Since I already have related resources from my BSN days, I have a ready arsenal. If you don't have much yourself, consider borrowing textbooks from friends or the library (buying new stuff defeats the advantage of saving money).

Okay, so textbooks could be so voluminous at times--good thing we don't have to read the whole thing. I noticed in the practice exam that several questions are only from several fundamental concepts. Observe the trend yourself, and pick from the things that usually come up.

I also bought an MSA NMAT reviewer, just to have a better grasp of the things that might pop out in the exam. While it did cost me 695 pesos, it certainly is a lot cheaper than unloading 5,000+ for a week's worth of review classes. Read how it did (or somehow did not) help me review for the exams.

There are also a lot of resources on the internet. I found the WTAMU College Algebra review quite helpful in remembering what I need to do with the numbers on the quantitative exam. You could also try searching for free Ebooks if you don't fancy buying or borrowing. I will post more sites in the future if I stumble upon some really good ones.

Site to read for Sociology basics: Sparknotes: Sociology

Aside from lessons, it is also equally helpful to read on forums discussing the NMAT. People who have taken the exam before usually give invaluable advice regarding the nitty gritty and pecularities of actually taking the exam. So far I am keeping a number of things to mind.

a. Be wary of the time. The exam is really set to have you work on time pressure.

b. Never write on your test booklet, unless you want to have to erase everything before you can submit your paper.

d. Write the alphabet on a scratch paper so answering the series/pattern part is easier.

c. Come early to the testing center for it can become quite chaotic.

d. And lastly, bring a sweater.

These are not foolproof ways of acing the test. I think however, that with the right combination of street smart, hard work and prayers, it is possible for anyone to get a good score on the exam. I still don't know how my means will do for me when I actually sit right in the testing center. But I will certainly share what worked and what did not on my next posts.

So Good luck to all of us. :)

PS. If you are also reviewing from the NMAT, or have taken it yourself in the past, I would really appreciate some tips and comments. God Bless.

ako nag take ako NMAT in our senior year (December 2007).. here are my tips:

1. be early. for sure ang haba ng pila sa labas ng DLSU. baka magpanic ka kung makita mo ang long line. pero mabilis naman gumalaw ang linya.

2. much better kung magbaon ka na lang ng lunch. kasi nung time ko, nahirapan kami maghanap ng makakainan during lunch break. puno lahat as in. we ended up at pizza hut pero sobrang bagal ng service muntik na kami malate.

3. wear comfortable clothing. if you want magdala ng jacket kasi baka lamigin sa testing room.

4. bring all the required documents esp test permit, pencils and eraser if you want.

kaya mo yan aubrey!.. alam ko nasa top percentile ka na naman. matataranta lang yung mga katabi mo pag nalaman nilang board topnotcher ka. hahaha.. ;)

ps. wala akong tips about sa review kasi hindi ko sineryoso. i got the score i deserve. mahirap pala lalo na nakalimutan ko na mga lessons sa chemistry, math at physics. pero in fairness, my questions about maslow's natuwa ako naapply ko kahit papaano ang natutunan natin sa nursing school. haha. yun lang. :p

Hi Rjay! This is really thoughtful of you, :P Salamat. I really don't know how I'll fare with the exam. Every time I try to answer the practice questions, parang I am always dumbfounded (especially Physics and Chem!) I am trying my best not to procrastinate on reviewing ehehe. Oi di ba you're based in the US already? Are you planning to study med any time soon?

Anonymous said...

A tip:

You can skip sections of each part and proceed to sections you feel you know better and can answer faster. This is crucial when answering Part 1 of the NMAT.

I ended up wasting time on the maths and having to wing it on the visual acuity and sections after it when I took the NMAT last December.

ako nga di ko natapos sagutan yung practice exam.. haha..
about med school, i have plans.. probably next year na.. i need to finish muna my nclex

im gonna apply for UST and FEU. my parents inquired re UST and good thing, we dont have to take back subjects esp. biology. kulang kasi tayo ng units based sa requirements pero no need na daw.
ok din sa FEU..syempre loyal ako and its cheaper compared to UST. i trust NRMF especially now they have produce the recent topnotchers. gusto ko ako din in the future like you. hehe. but im still undecided. i have to take the NMAT again - seriously. :)

@Ice. I reviewed for a month. Well more like two weeks, discounting procrastination. Hehe.

@Ice. The practice exams are more than sufficient. MSA is too difficult. You can read around for my evaluation of the actual NMAT exam.

Thanks for reading! :)

tip sa reading comprehension..

1. Read the question first before reading the text so it would be easier for you to understand what it is about.

2. while reading the questions, keep in mind the keywords so you could just look it up in the text faster..

3. fast reading so you could efficiently make use of your time

..and..don't be nervous while taking the exam since it'll give you a hard time concentrating and answering it..

Hello Aubrey!!!

It's a good thing that you have this blog... Nung nag-aaral pa ako ng nursing I decided to study medicine. But I have unclear ideas on how I would pursue it and where would I start with. I just heard that you would have to take the NMAT Exam 1st, before you can enroll to a med school, pero d ko naman alam kung papaano at saan mag-aaplay for the exam. You made everything clear to me. And most of all... you inspired me to pursue my dreams... Thanks a lot!!!

What you eat at lunch is important. I overheard other takers saying how they were so sleepy during PART II. It may have been due to a heavy lunch. That would take your blood flow from your brain to your stomach. Or maybe a high sugar lunch. That would cause your sugar to go high and then plunge down after your body starts pumping a lot of insulin in response to the high sugar intake. I guess this also applies to breakfast.
It really helps to go to the place early too. I was at the testing site by 6 am.
Aubrey:
I stumbled upon your blog only after I took the NMAT. I can really say that what you've put down is true. I'm giving your URL to my friends who are planning to take the NMAT. I wish I'd stumbled upon your blog sooner. I might have been inspired to review. I wasn't able to answer the last 10 or more questions in part 1 (perceptual acuity) because I didn't know those questions were there. Those would have been the easiest to answer. The only part I reviewed was the Language part. (1 hour review? haha) But thank got I passed anyway. It was because so many people prayed for me.
To God be the glory. He must have a plan for my life.

Got 91 by the way.

Hi Aubrey!

Thank you very much for your tips. It is surely enlightening to know. By the way, when does CEM conduct their NMAT exams? Apparently, I'm interested taking Med School here in Cebu.

April and December. Check CEM's website around February to get updates for the April exam.

hi aubrey im planning to take the NMAT this april. I've tried looking for NMAT reviewers but unfortunately I can't find any. Do you know any sources of NMAT reviewers? And who are some of the authors of the reviewers that I can really use? I'm really at a loss here. I hope you can help me. Thanks. By the way i'm Zel, 24 from QC.

Aubrey said...

I bet you've looked for the MSA. That's the only reviewer I know of. Although I really think the practice exams (the one CEM gives you right upon application) should be enough to cover for the test itself. MSA is waay too difficult.

Hi Aubrey! I'm Alyssa, a second year student this coming school year. I would like to let you know that I was SSSOO INSPIRED with what you have shared at your blog. It feeds me all the information I've been looking for about NMAT.

As early as my age, 17, I just want to be prepared enough for this required exam for all students who wish to enter a med school in the country. Hmm, it might be quite funny for some that I was already planning of what to do until the time comes that I will be taking the exam, but I think, as early as this, I should have some plan and tips to keep in mind.

You're right with the statement that internet is your friend. Like what have you done, I read some forums about NMAT so that I can have a background on how this exam will be. So, TWO THUMBS UP with your blog, I know a lot of students got acquainted with your site.

Ahm, I, as a BSN student, do you have some advice that would tell me some activity or work that I can do inspite of having a loaded schedule??

Thank you thank you so much. =)) You're respond with this will be a great help for me. Hope you'll reply. =) thank you again!

Aubrey said...

Well to be honest, NMAT subjects don't really jive with what we take up in Nursing. Perhaps the best you could do is assign a few weeks for pure NMAT study. Focus is really important if you want to get a good grade, whether NMAT, or in school. I hope you have the luxury of time in the coming months though. Best graces!

Aubrey, I am so glad I came across your blog while trying to find out more about Xavier Medical School, my now numero uno choice. I am already a Biochemistry degree graduate in the United States. At this point, going to medical school in the U.S is not an option because of finances and because I am just so sick and tired of the place; plus, I spend some time in the phil this summer and I really love it.
Anyways, honestly, I don't know how to prepare for the NMAT. Some says using a regular MCAT preparation protocol will suffice, but by what I have read on your blog, it seems that might just be too much and might catapult me way over the target. When I talked to the dean of medicine at Perpetual Help in Manila, she told me not to bother in studying for the NMAT, but I am thinking that was because the school does not consider NMAT as a necessary requirements for admission into their school. It is kind of confusing because, now, I am not sure what weight I should put on this NMAT thing or how to study for it, or the material to use. I heard from some american that the verbal section is kind of different from what we are use to seeing here. Can you please help?

Aubrey said...

I've compared MCAT reviewers and the actual NMAT exams and I'm quite sure it would be too much, practically beyond target, if you go for MCAT protocol. I'm not saying it's gonna be a kindergarten exam but learning basic formulas and concepts would be enough (that would be one subject less since you're a Biochemistry student.) The verbal exams would be more of analyzing definitions relative to the relationship of words given.

A good NMAT score is a necessary credential, regardless of what school. It would be nice to have a safety net especially in competitive schools where applicants are ranked.

hello miss aubrey. what subjects or topics i need to concentrate so it could help me get a good nmat score? i'm planning to take the exam this year.

Hi Aubrey,
I've been reading this page about nmat for sometime. And its just now that I decided to comment. Im getting really nervous coz my exam is in November here in the US. I took the NMAT before but I didnt get the score that I need to be accepted in UST. Any advice as to what I should study??? Im doing self study now but Im getting overwhelmed with all the materials!

Aubrey said...

Hi Anonymous and Camille. What you basically need to focus on are the basic sciences. What I did was to take note of all the topics on the practice exams, and somehow others which are related. From there I reviewed HS books, particularly in Chem and Physics. If you're a non-science grad (I think Nursing somehow gave me an advantage on that), you would need to brush up on Biology as well.

Hi. This is really helpful. I also have read your other blogs and I find them really interesting and helpful. It is like an answered prayer. Im having doubts whether to take med or not, but reading your blog made me decide to give it a shot. I just have one quick question, do you know when the exam will be this december 2012? Thanks a lot! :)

Laus Deo!

Thank you po sa iyong blog at sa iba pang nag-post ng kanilang advices with regards to taking the NMAT. Malaki po ang naitulong nito sa pagtake ko ng NMAT. Kahit hindi po ako masyadong nakapag-prepare, wala akong review center, nag-cracram ako the night before the exam, nagkaroon ako ng kahit na kaunting confidence in taking the exam. And thanks be to God, nakuha ko 'yong aking aim na 90+ na percentage. It's amazing & a miracle (Hindi ko kasi nasagutan 'yong ilang items sa Quantitative, at 'yong iba paghindi ko alam 'yong sagot, letter C na lang 'yong sinasagot ko). I offer this achievement to the Lord, dahil alam ko na hindi ko 'yon kaya kung ako lang. At, nagpapasalamat din ako sa aking family (most of all, my parents) na nag-sacrifice ng malaki para ma-achieve ko ito... ;)

Just brush up your high school books plus your psyche and socio books in college.

I opted to do self studying since I dont want to spend needlessly... But it is true that you'll have to spend a lot of time, dedication and hardwork.

as for me, it really paid off. God rewards those who work and pray hard.
